What Presidents Are For

Have you ever wondered why certain Democratic senators are so keen on climbing into bed with their Republican colleagues? Paul Krugman nails it:

Honestly, I don’t know what these Democrats are trying to achieve. Yes, some of the balking senators receive large campaign contributions from the medical-industrial complex — but who in politics doesn’t? If I had to guess, I’d say that what’s really going on is that relatively conservative Democrats still cling to the old dream of becoming kingmakers, of recreating the bipartisan center that used to run America. [Emphasis added]

The feeding of gargantuan senatorial egos will trump the passage of good public policy every time. (Remember when Kent Conrad weaseled out of his pledge not to seek a second term by running for the other Senate seat in North Dakota?  The seat formerly held by the dead guy? Kent loves being a big shot.)

Ronald Reagan famously “went over the heads” of the media to enact his bone-headed agenda. Barack Obama needs to squash the Little Dictators in the Senate and muscle through the kind of health care bill that 72% of the American people want – one with a public option. Otherwise, it’ll be business as usual, with the insurance companies and drug lords happily gouging us to our graves — courtesy of Max Baucus and Company.
