Two Futures

1)  President Barack Obama caves to the Konrad Konservative Kaukus and signs a watered-down health care bill. A Connecticut insurance CEO loses an eye to a stray champagne cork.  Republican politicians declare total victory and call off the radio dogs.   Despite Obama’s efforts to portray his cowardice as courage, the media declares him political roadkill.  The Democratic base is demoralized.   The wingnut Republican base — now successfully spayed and neutered — begins to coalesce around a beaming Mitt Romney.  The media decrees that Obama must not over-reach again and must toe the Blue Dog Line.  Budget deficits become  a threat to civilization as we know it.  Republicans propose tax cuts for the rich, to loud hosannas from the punditry.  Democrats curl up into a ball, the better to be kicked.

2)  President Barack Obama reads a book about Lyndon Johnson while on vacation.  He comes back to Washington and starts kicking ass and taking names.  He attaches every one of Glenn Beck’s paranoid racist lies to the Republican Party.  The pantywaists in the punditry call him shrill, but Obama doesn’t care.   Meanwhile, the Republican wingnut base comes totally unglued.  They begin bringing guns to Republican rallies and firing them like Saddam Hussein. The public is repulsed, and Democrats pass a strong health care bill with a public option.  The Democratic base is energized.  Republicans call for another round of tax cuts for the rich.  Tom Tancredo surges in the Republican presidential sweepstakes.

  1. Third option:

President Barack Obama reads a book about Lyndon Johnson while on vacation. The Liberals are repulsed, the Independents split, and the Conservatives galvanized. Fearful of the People’s wrath – physical and electoral – the Dems pass only “watered-down” version of ObamaCare. The Democratic base is utterly demoralized. The “wingnut” Republican base — now vindicated and energetic — begins to coalesce around a beaming Sarah Palin. 😉

  2. “Fearful of the People’s wrath — physical and electoral” . . .

I love wingnuts. They always prove my points for me.

Earth to Jonolan: “Independent voters” — hell, all Americans with half a brain and a whole conscience — don’t want to see people threatened at gunpoint by a bunch of crazed, Glenn Beck zomboids.

And isn’t Sarah Palin the perfect leader for this Republican Army of Morons?

Single payer heath care is just a shot away. (Mick Jagger — Gimme Shelter.)

  3. I only offered a 3rd option, not a total endorsement of it, Rick.

I’ve studied enough history – and lived through enough of it – to know how reactionary the American electorate is. No matter your view of Palin, she’s a possibility – as described above – in 2012.
