Conservative Crack-Up: Obama, the Olympics, and Wingnut Nation

Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are radio clowns; no one should expect them to be sensible.  But isn’t National Review‘s Victor Davis Hanson some kind of renowned classics professor?  Isn’t he supposed to be providing the frontline bloviators with the intellectual underpinnings for their fusillades of angry right-wing lunacy?

Well, he’s not doing a very good job.  In common with the garden-variety teabagger, Professor Hanson sees Barack Obama’s inability to secure the Olympics for Chicago as the beginning of the end of his presidency.  Unfortunately, he also feels obligated to give us four dumb reasons to swallow the wingnut party line.  Here’s the most ridiculous one:

Obama should remember that there is a perfect storm brewing: The more we hear about Valerie Jarrett, Rahm Emanuel, Bill Ayers, and all his old Chicago friends, along with rumors about Tony Rezko–style backroom deals to cash in on Chicago real estate involving the Olympics, and continuing stories about Chicago’s street violence and corruption — the more it hurts the president to be identified as a “Chicago politician” who tries in heavy-handed fashion to implement change through the “Chicago way.”  To a younger Obama, Chicago was the romantic can-do town of Reverend Wright, Michael Jordan, Oprah, and the Daley machine; to the world at large, it is something quite different, and far more unappealing.

So, Victor: Are you saying the International Olympic Committee is keeping close tabs on Tony Rezko and Valerie Jarrett (I don’t even know who she is) and is holding their alleged misdeeds against Barack Obama and the whole gosh darn USA?  Whatever you say, pal.  Get some rest.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The inmates are running the Republican asylum.  They’d better get a grip if they don’t want to self- destruct before 2010.
