White House Watch: Stalking Olympia Snowe

This better not be true:

Multiple sources tell TPMDC that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is very close to rounding up 60 members in support of a public option with an opt out clause, and are continuing to push skeptical members.  But they also say that the White House is pushing back against the idea, in a bid to retain the support of Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME).

“They’re skeptical of opt out and are generally deferential to the Snowe strategy that involves the trigger,” said one source close to negotiations between the Senate and the White House. “They’re certainly not calming moderates’ concerns on opt out.”

Earth to David Axelrod:  It’s not 2008 anymore.  The election is over.  Your guy won.  And you know what?

The fucking Republicans hate Barack Obama’s fucking guts and want to fucking destroy his presidency!  They hate him just as fucking much as they used to hate Hillary Clinton!

So please forget — once and for all — your “post-partisan” wet dreams.  Olympia Snowe isn’t all that.  Who in the country outside of Maine really gives a rat’s ass what she thinks?  Who’s even going to care that she’s a Republican unless you tell them how goddamn important it is?

To call your pathetic play for her support a “fig leaf of bipartisanship” is an insult to fig leaves.  It’s fucking embarrassing.

The “opt-out” idea was a gift dropped in your laps.  It’s not the best way to implement the public option, but the reality is that few state legislatures would actually be dumb enough to abuse their own citizens — by taking away choices — when they don’t have to.

My god, even Ben Nelson is practically begging to be persuaded into doing the right thing for once in his life.  And you guys in the White House are giving him the cold shoulder because you can’t bear to lose Olympia’s fickle support in the Senate?  She’s already as much as said she won’t vote for the final bill.

Say it ain’t so, guys.  Man up, and get this thing done.
