Republicanus Moronicus

It’s quite wrong to say that Republicans are the party of no ideas.  They’re actually the party of two ideas: tax cuts for the rich and deregulation.  In rough accordance with the philosophy of Steve Martin’s old Saturday Night Live character Theodoric of York — a medieval doctor who prescribed a good bleeding for every malady — Republican domestic policy begins and ends with dispensing federal largesse to the party’s corporate paymasters.  No thinking is ever required!

So it’s no accident that national embarrassments like Steve King, Virginia Foxx, Louie Gohmert, and Jean Schmidt seem to overpopulate today’s GOP.  A budding politician who’s kinda dumb and kinda lazy will naturally gravitate to the clan that gives him license to find issues suited to his basest prejudices.  It’s fun, and it’s how conservatives get elected.

I have a pretty strong stomach for wingnuts, but I had a hard time watching  the health care debate this weekend on C-SPAN.  The United States of America has two real political parties, and one of them is completely worthless.  Depressing.
