Under Mike’s Thumb

The official media line on Michael Steele is that he’s in serious hot water over his comments on Afghanistan.  I don’t buy it.

Chairman Steele has about as much chance of getting booted from the RNC as Ted Lange had of losing the bartender gig on The Love Boat.  Not only is Steele the only major black guy serving on board the S. S. Republican — he’s also a guy who knows where all the racist skeletons are stashed below the poop deck.  Remember when he said:

For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South.  Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, ‘Bubba’ went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton.

That was a shot aimed squarely at the GOP’s money men:  Boys, I can flap my gums like this any time I want to.  And WORSE.  So you’d better be nice to me.

Michael Steele may be black, but he’s still — when all is said and done — just a Republican politician.  These characters don’t waste their time thinking about “good government bullshit” (as Ray Liotta so charmingly put it in Goodfellas).  They want to make money, hand over fist.

It’s extremely problematic for the Republican Party to try to get rid of Michael Steele before he’s ready to be gotten rid of — and Steele knows it.  Somewhere down the line, this guy will be trolling for a nice golden parachute to ease his ass back into “the private sector”.  In this aggressively pecuniary context, a little political fireworks on his resume won’t be a bad thing.

It’s going to take a generous corporate contract — one with lots and lots of zeroes — to keep Mike’s big Republican yap shut for good.

Are you listening, Karl Rove?  You’d better be.
