Big Brother Conservatives

Political Axiom Number 8 (The “Busybody” Principle): The level of interest that social conservatives have in any issue is inversely proportional to the relevance of that issue to their actual daily lives.

Case in point: Gay marriage. U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker wrote the following in his decision overturning California’s Proposition 8 yesterday (the caps are his):

A PRIVATE MORAL VIEW THAT SAME-SEX COUPLES ARE INFERIOR TO OPPOSITE-SEX COUPLES IS NOT A PROPER BASIS FOR LEGISLATION. . .

Indeed.  As we used to say on the playground: Mind your own beeswax!

Many conservatives seem to believe that corporations — whose behavior has an enormous effect on virtually everyone in society — should largely be free to do as they please.  Individual citizens, however have no such freedom.  Their behavior — especially when it affects no else — must conform to a strict moral code determined by others.

Strange but true in the land of the free!

  1. I love it. I’ve often thought that but didn’t have an axiom for it.
