BREAKING: Steele Resigns As RNC Chair

REUTERS — Succumbing to pressure from party leaders and corporate donors unhappy with his performance during the 2010 campaign, Michael Steele resigned today as chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Thomas J. Donahue, president of the U. S. Chamber of Commerce, announced that Mr. Steele would be replaced by Ed Gillespie, effective immediately.  Mr. Gillespie currently serves as an adviser to American Crossroads, a 527 organization founded by Karl Rove which raises money for Republican candidates.

Mr. Steele issued the following statement:

It’s a sad day in politics when an African-American Republican is pushed aside to make room for yet another Caucasian insider.  Though the days of Jim Crow are — thankfully — long gone, the divisive “Southern Strategy” of pitting whites against blacks still lives in the party of Lincoln.  I call on all fair-minded Republicans to look into their hearts and strive to make the GOP the true “big tent” we need it to be.

I will have much more to say on this topic in the coming weeks and months.

Mr. Donahue and Mr. Gillespie could not be reached for comment.

(This is the Republican Party’s nightmare scenario.  If the money men really want to  make Steele go away quietly, they’d better give him a golden parachute worthy of LeBron James.  They certainly don’t want the guy taking his big mouth to South Beach now, do they?)
