Another Fear Card

According to conservatives, the American Government — in terms of its ability to improve the lives of its citizens — is completely feckless: a pitiful, helpless giant, utterly incapable of creating jobs, reducing poverty or providing affordable health care.  The “free market” is the only thing that works.

But when it comes to imposing its will on other countries, the United States, according to these same conservatives, is all but omnipotent:

Though many will be tempted to superficially interpret the Egyptian demonstrations as an uprising for populist democracy, they must recall how such similar initial views of the 1979 Iranian Revolution were belied by the mullahs’ radical jackbooted murderers, who remain bent upon grasping regional hegemony and nuclear weaponry. . . .

Inexcusably, this crisis has been hastened and exacerbated by the U.S. Administration’s refusal to whole-heartedly embrace Iran’s truly democratic 2009 Green Revolution.  Make no mistake: strategically and cynically, freedom’s radicalized enemy is exploiting a real religion to undermine liberty and true reform just as Soviet communism posed as a secular creed to obtain the same illegitimate ends.

If we fail to meet today’s enemy on the same determined, principled terms, we will too late awake in a nightmare world.  But, if today’s enemy is steadfastly met and bested, liberty and the rule of law will be unleashed for millions throughout the world.

Right-wing politicians, as servants of the corporate oligarchy, must implement policies which necessarily transfer as much wealth as possible into as few hands as possible.  This leaves them with little of substance to offer ordinary voters, whose support they nonetheless need to stay in power.  Although they’re masters of disingenuous sloganeering, sometimes even Frank Luntz can’t win an election for them.  Hence, they’re constantly on the lookout for new foreign threats with which to distract and frighten the masses.

Military action is always just a bad poll away.

  1. I should get paid for my time educating you Rick. But don’t worry, I’m sure there is a government subsidy somewhere to cover it.

Conservatives are not for using military force to effect foreign governments. In fact, conservatives have been calling for a recall of US troops from abroad. I served in Germany and I can tell you that it is a waste of money to have our troops in Germany.

It is the progressive Republicans, in the classic Teddy Roosevelt style, that think they can use the military to “spread democracy”. Conservatives know that democracy needs to be earned, not forced upon people.
