Civilization And Its Discontents

Paul Krugman:

Some have asked if there aren’t conservative sites I read regularly.  Well, no.  I will read anything I’ve been informed about that’s either interesting or revealing; but I don’t know of any economics or politics sites on that side that regularly provide analysis or information I need to take seriously.

Hear, hear.

Conservatism today rests on one simple principle: The purpose of government is to act as a buffer between the ruling classes and the lower classes.

But in the real world, as more and more wealth becomes concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, it’s becoming clear that the rich need to pay more for civilization than they are currently paying.  This can happen the easy way or the hard way.

Until conservatives recognize this dangerous state of affairs, they have nothing useful to say about balanced budgets or much of anything else.
