The Debt Ceiling: Worst Case Scenario

Conventional wisdom says that Wall Street speculators and corporate oligarchs will ultimately pressure Republicans to raise the debt ceiling because they’re afraid of an economic catastrophe.  I’m not so sure.  What if they’re willing to endure some short-term pain in order to guarantee the defeat of Barack Obama in 2012?  A Republican government elected in the midst of another brutal recession might be well-positioned to complete the destruction of the American middle class.

Just a thought.

  1. The debt ceiling is not a political game to be played by children. Adults know that there is no reason to raise the debt ceiling unless you intend to drive the country further and further into debt.

Those that vote against raising the debt ceiling are the ones willing to do the hard work of finally fixing our economic problems. Those that want to raise the debt ceiling are willing to sell out future to avoid the responsibility that they asked to be elected in order to shoulder.

Time for these politicians to “man up” or resign and let someone else with a back bone take their spot and get to work fixing this mess.
