The spectacle of Mitt Romney twisting himself into a pretzel over his healthcare record illustrates the intellectual bankruptcy of the Republican Party. A Democratic governor who passed a program providing 98% of his constituents with affordable health insurance would brag about it at Trumpian levels. But Mitt Romney can’t do that. Why? Because Romneycare has mandates. Romneycare is a government takeover. Romneycare is — Obamacare!
Strangely, though, Republicans love Paul Ryan’s Medicare reform plan. But what does Ryancare do? It forces seniors to buy private health insurance. That’s a mandate. It forces taxpayers to foot the bill for vouchers. That’s a government takeover. In short, Obamacare is — Ryancare!
Republicans oppose the Affordable Care Act for two reasons: Insurance companies are against it, and Democrats are for it. All their speechifying about “freedom” is strictly for the teabaggers, who will swallow anything sprinkled with a few words from the Constitution.
