This Heritage Foundation report is getting a lot of play in the right-wing hate machine. It says that poor people who have air conditioning and refrigerators aren’t really poor at all. Unless you’re actually living in a shantytown and eating out of a dumpster, you have it pretty good in America, so quit your bitching. The job creators need another tax cut.
I won’t go into the substantive reasons why this report is so wrong. (Media Matters has a good summary here.) Let me just point out why the Mighty Wurlitzer is pushing it.
Economic policies of the Paul Ryan variety are guaranteed to enrich the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us. As a result, Republican politicians must ensure that whatever anger Americans feel at falling behind is directed down rather than up. Minimizing the plight of people living in poverty is an element of the propaganda war designed to get the middle class to accept its own diminished condition.
Call it “The Return of the Welfare Queen”.
