REUTERS – In a joint appearance in the White House Rose Garden today, President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner announced they have reached an agreement on raising the nation’s debt ceiling.
“I proposed that Congress vote to raise the debt ceiling, and the president accepted,” said Boehner. “To be perfectly honest, I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. I feel kind of stupid.”
Obama praised Boehner for his “bold vision”.
“This agreement wouldn’t have come about without John’s outside-the-box thinking,” said Obama, adding, “The best way to avoid defaulting is not to go into default.”
Although the measure is expected to pass, it will have to do so without the support of the House Tea Party Caucus.
“We’ve never voted for anything sensible before, and we’re certainly not going to start now,” said Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX).
