Republicans are crowing over a CBS News poll that says 54% of Americans don’t think Barack Obama deserves to be re-elected. Well, he probably doesn’t. I certainly think he could have done a better job in the last three years. His constant “reaching out” to frauds like Olympia Snowe, morons like Chuck Grassley, and swine like John Boehner got him nowhere, so now he’s playing ideological catch-up — and it had better work.
But if Obama doesn’t deserve a second term, does it follow that Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney deserves a first term? Hell, no it doesn’t! Obama’s Republican predecessor was so godawful that his godawfulness has been seared into voters’ brains. I doubt the RNC will let him show his face (at least in prime time) at the convention next year.
Gingrich and Romney are stylistic opposites (they might have been a cheesy comedy team, sort of like Allen and Rossi, back in the sixties), but Michele Bachmann is spot-on in calling them “Newt Romney”. I would take it a step further and call them “Newt Romney Bush”. Their economic policies are straight out of Dubya’s recession playbook, only worse.
I can’t wrap my brain around the idea of Obama losing to either of these retreads — particularly since they’re both such horrible candidates.
