Romney’s Clownish Tipping Point?

You can get elected president if people think you’re a jerk:

You can get elected president if people think you’re a lightweight:

You can get elected president if people think you’re a cad:

But you can’t get elected president if people think you’re a buffoon:

It’s pointless for Barack Obama to attempt to defeat Mitt Romney on the basis of “the issues.” Romney is going to lie about everything anyway, and the media is going to let him get away with it. Instead, Obama should focus on Romney’s buffoonery.

Even Republicans have noticed, much to their chagrin, that Romney won’t take any firm positions anymore. He morphed himself into a “severe conservative” for the primaries, and rather than morph himself back for the general, he’s decided to campaign as a human cardboard cutout. As a result, he’s in grave danger of becoming a national joke (it doesn’t help that he says so many goofy things), and Obama should be storing up plenty of zingers to use during the debates.

The president should never get into the weeds on policy. Undecided voters are confused enough as it is. He should focus, gently but firmly, on the absurdity of Mitt Romney today.

Responses

  1. Romney will win, and he’ll win easily, thanks to Citizens United. No sitting president has ever won reelection when he was outspent by his opponent. The rest of this stuff is meaningless.

  2. I’m not so sure. Humanoid tissue seems to reject Mitt Romney instinctively, and yet — amazingly! — the man is making the election a popularity contest.

I don’t know if any amount of money can save Romney from himself.
