Romney’s Lies: Lie #10 (“The Small Business Whopper”)

Mitt Romney did not originate Romney Lie Number Ten. Rather, “The Small Business Whopper” been a staple in the Republican Party’s Lexicon of Lies for many years. Every Republican politician tells this lie at least once a week. Here’s Romney’s version:

What the president is proposing is a massive tax increase on job creators and small business. Small businesses are overwhelmingly being taxed not at a corporate rate, but at the individual tax rate. So successful small business will see their taxes go up dramatically and that will kill jobs.

If I had a dollar for every time this lie has been debunked, I’d need one of Mitt Romney’s Swiss bank accounts. Here, for example:

As Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented, the Tax Policy Center has estimated that a mere 2 percent of tax returns reporting small business income in 2007 earned enough income to be affected by the expiration of the Bush tax cuts on individuals earning more than $200,000 per year and families earning more than $250,000 per year — not 80 percent.

I don’t really fault Romney lying about small business. Why shouldn’t he? The media never makes anyone pay a price for it. It’s a guaranteed freebie.
